Reviews of Oak River Rehab

My mom was in Oak River for two months for complications from major surgery. Mentally, mom was depressed and disoriented when she first arrived. The Staff and Nurses were always positive and loving and treated her as family through a difficult recovery. They accommodated all our family and worked with us through the entire process. Mom returned home able to care for herself and post operative care requirements she was taught. She left with an upbeat, positive attitude ready for life. Can't say enough about the entire team.

I cannot say enough about the kind, quality care that was given to our mother at Oak River. The facility was clean, and they kept our mother clean. Terri the event coordinator helped our mother attend events,The cafeteria prepared wonder balanced meals, specially preped to help her eat. Nursing staff monitored all her meds and kept us Informed on her progres. Their social services were a tremendous help in processing paperwork so that we had the help we needed when we brought mom home.
Truly a blessing for my family.

A dear friend of mine went there for rehab. He had fallen at my house when I was out of town working. Since he wasn't answering his phone I asked some nurse friends to go check on him. He had fallen and been on the floor 18 hours. Anyone who does that goes into rhabdomyolysis and then acute kidney failure. He wanted to go to Oak River "because they have a smoking area". I had come back for a few days as I was quite worried about him. I also wanted him to go to a good rehab. My rehab of choice is the Marquis, because I personally know a bright bubbly young woman who works there and when it came time for her aunt to die she was there. All of the staff were so wonderful for her last days, and let us be included when she was based and dressed for the mortuary. Another friend was there after back surgery and he was very impressed at the surroundings, the rehab, and how fast he regained strength. While I was in the room the nurse came in and Mitch had agreed to go to the Marquis so she said she would talk to his social worker. Well, somehow he ended up going to Oak River I discovered after I left town to go to work again. His rehab was pitiful. He was in bed 22 to 23 hours a day. When I got back to town I went and watched the one out of the room therapy he had a day. He was given a ball, and he squeezed it between his legs with minimal effort 10 times. A little while later a therapist came back and took the ball and tied a band around his legs. He opened his legs 10 times and then quit. Nobody was there with him to encourage him. He was still not quite in his right mind at the time either. The third exercise was a 1 lb weight around his left ankle which he lifted about 10 times. He would not move his right leg because his arthritis caused it to hurt. Nobody did any education about when you have arthritis you need to move the joint in order to keep circulation going to it and keep the synovial fluid from thickening. He also didn't want to move his arms because he had arthritis in his shoulders. He at the time had already gotten one frozen shoulder. When it was time for him to go home, he was so weak when it came to walking. When we were about to step off the curb I took his left arm and wrapped my right arm around it and grasprd his hand. When his feet were on the asphalt he kept going down. I said push! Push hard with your legs or you're going to fall completely! The downward progress stopped and he was able with my assist to regain his footing and leg control. I would say that's pretty sad for being at rehab for a month. I was leaving that day to go to Santa Monica and get injections in my neck for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. I ended up taking him and the dogs because he could not be left home. And he wanted to go too. The first night we did not get very far down the road, and he fell in the doorway of our hotel. The rest of the trip was about the same, and actually the next 10 months. He fell regularly in the kitchen, in the yard, in a friend's yard,... He ended up breaking his ankle in three places when I went to Sedona for an Intensive Myofascial Release at the end of May. I had 4 hours of physical therapy every day for two weeks. He has not been able to bear weight on the ankle that he broke, Yet they did a lot of bed exercises as well as they massaged anti-inflammatory cream into his shoulders and his knees. He was very impressed and liked the care at the Marquis. He is coming home today with a walker that has big wheels and a seat. Also some other miscellaneous equipment. If you or someone you love needs to have rehab, I would say stay away from Oak River rehab. There were nurses and other staff there that were great. Yet the point of rehab is to regain strength.

I would like to give kudos to some people. Amber LVN on nights. Josie LVN on nights who I believe is no longer there. Sam CNA on nights. All of these ladies pulled me through some very tough times after my stroke. I would like to thank both wound nurses. I would also like to thank Jerry in social services who did a wonderful job getting me lined out with VA care and equipment. There are also many others whose names I don't remember.

The staff is amazing. Every person that I have had the pleasure of meeting has been caring, personable, and professional. The food is good, and they cater to your likes, dislikes, and needs. I am glad that I am rehabilitating at Oak River.

THIS PLACE IS TRASH!!!! My mother had been here a couple days due to an accident and we are already removing her. The staff is unacceptable in every way; not receiving medication at the time it’s needed, not bathing/treating people correctly, and weird comments from the doctor!

I am currently staying with them following an unexpected two way bypass. I was not able to take care of my self at home but with their help I soon will. The nurses are great and to those who complain about unreasonable wait times, sometimes several call lights go off at the same time. The nurses and nurses aides scramble to take care of their patients needs as quickly as possible. I've seen therapists, housekeeping, and even office staff helping where they could. Nobody wants to be here but if you need some help this is a good place to get it.

After many conversations about my mother's experience here I believe she was "snowed". Apparently that means the nurse will give medicine to keep her quiet and easy to care for. It's hard to go into details because it's sad and my mom died there. Alot of what was happening is a blur. I just know that Mercy said that there wasn't anything physically wrong that she was old and exhausted so maybe that was it. Just pay attention to your loved one, you never know.
