Do not have your kids attend the early learning center, their safety is at risk!

None of the staff had ever met me before, but I was able to walk inside (“locked” doors weren’t locked), tell them I’m here to pick up “name” and they just let me leave with him. No ID check, didn’t ask for my name, didn’t do anything to confirm my identity, and let my child leave with a hypothetical stranger.

I reported this to the director (she’s really nice) but then somehow my child who was attending there for his first two weeks suddenly became aggressive and hostile to staff and kids. Nowhere else, not a single time has he ever been aggressive or hostile to other people. He’s had tantrums, as any normal toddler but NEVER was hostile. So he was kicked out of the program on his second full week attending.

At times he even came home with most of his lunch and was STARVING. So aside for what very much seems to be retaliation for reporting their neglect, they do not ensure the safety of your children there. I’d highly urge any parent to avoid this place as your kid will not be safe here. They’ll let any stranger grab your child.

The people at the front desk are always so welcoming. The gym is extremely clean, well having just enough people in it to be able to use all of the equipment when wanted. The locker rooms are very efficient as well.

We were here only for the showers which they allowed us to use for 3 dollars. Very clean, efficient and friendly service.

The exercise classes are excellent! Lots of early morning offerings AND after work options. The weight room is so much better since the renovation. I'm only really there for classes and weights, but there seems to be tons for family and community members too. It's super easy to get your money's worth.

There is a lot of commonality in the YMCA nowadays; as local YMCAs lose focus on their communities. There’s no denying it’s become a Sanford Staple in the years it’s been here, but I feel as time has gone on, this association has lost touch with the inner Sanford community, and does not outreach to everyone anymore. Perhaps their marketing could be the issue, and I could be wrong about how they’re treating Sanford. It certainly seems like it’s becoming less inclusive, too. Maybe due to the fact that they’re slacking in community outreach.

However, there’s no denying that the facilities bring a spark to Sanford. The trails surrounding the YMCA provide a great way for community members to exercise, and the Early Learning Program provides an alternative to Sanford’s school system, which is known to limit academic acceleration for students, speaking from personal experience. The recent renovation of facilities has benefited its upkeep, too, with additional programs being added as a benefit.

The YMCA is a great place to go. But like all communities, and all organizations, there is room for improvement.

My favorite perk of being involved with Y is the free child care called PRIME TIME. It is available to the kiddos in families during times when adults are working out.
