Professional and Empathetic! I live in Fort Bragg and when one of my cats became ill on a weekend there was no emergency vet around to take Kahlua to. I did not realize how serious the situation was until Monday when he was leaving a trail of blood everywhere he went.
I began calling what local vets were open and none could see my baby for 2-3 months! One recommended Gualala Veterinary Clinic, 2 hours away down Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast or an ER vet in Santa Rosa, 4 hours away!
I called Gualala and the receptionist sounded very concerned about my cat’s condition and spoke with the doctor who said to get there as fast as possible. 2 hours later I arrived with my 2 year old kitty who was in a terrible state. He was checked in almost immediately and seen by an initial doctor who determined there was some kind of kidney issue.
Dr. Barkhurst consulted with me on her plans to address Kahlua’s dire situation. He had a kidney blockage which had gone on for an unknown amount of time. She recommended keeping him in her hospital overnight and possibly for 1-2 more days to see if the blockage could be corrected and the infection dealt with. I was given an estimate for his treatment and clearly told there was no guarantee he could be saved or that if he pulled through, the blockage would not return again at some point and he would not pull through again.
I was kept apprised of his progress each day by both the receptionist and Dr. Barkhurst. 3 days later I was able to pick up my kitty and after a 90 minute training session on giving Kahlua a daily IV, antibiotics and nausea meds, plus special hydration meals, we were headed back home. The most amazing fact was when I went to pay the bill it was considerably less than the estimate had been. As a senior with limited funds, this was an enormous help.
Kahlua seems to be recovering nicely and every day I have with him I am so thankful to the staff of the Gualala Veterinary Clinic!

Took my little old kitty Keetra to be seen for a mass on her ear that she scratched open. A few days prior to her appointment my kitty developed blood in her urine. The staff were kind and informative. We saw Dr. Jeannette Barkhurst. She went over all of my options and we came up with a game plan to get my Keetra girl feeling better. Dr. Jeannette Barkhurst also respected my decision that when/if the time came to remove the mass on her ear that I would not want to send it in for biopsy/not wanting to do chemotherapy if it would come back cancerous. I was very happy with our experience here. We will definitely be bringing in our other fur babies here!

Why are you even open if youre not available? My dog needed help and the lady at the counter was one of the most disrespectful, disdainful people I've ever met. I wanted to smack her for how she was choosing to speak to me, especially while dealing with an emergency. Avoid this place if your animal needs help. You wwill waste precious time needed. You will be told in the most obnoxious and slowed down Cali girl drawl. Avoid at all costs.

We have a place at Sea Ranch and found ourselves away from our typical pet doctor.

Sadie had been to the Santa Rosa vet only days before for a nasty infection and licking abscess on her foot. As it happens, because dogs can't talk it often takes a couple tries to get to the right diagnosis. She was licking STILL and it was getting nasty after the first visit to her regular vet.

An emergency - we needed to get in.

The office was quite friendly and accommodated us for the next AM. We arrived - we got the paper work settled and they took Sadie in (because of the pandemic). She was scared of course.

The doctor came out after awhile and explained that he thought she might have a foxtail up in her "finger" in her paw. He asked permission to sedate her and go looking for what was there if anything. Long story short....he found what the first vet missed. It happens. She indeed had a foxtail and they removed it and showed it to us. Poor girl.

She was in pain the first night home. We gave her her meds and she settled down. The NEXT DAY she was 75% and the day after 90 and a few days later she is really happy. The original blotchiness / allergy issues are still working their way out but the big issue is resolved. And we will be in touch with Pfeil if they don't resolved after the meds course.

We found Dr. Pfeil, professional, caring, responsive and frankly would consider him to be Sadie's doc of record if it were not so far...but we might switch anyway. Also Keelyn - the veterinary assistant was very helpful. Friendly, caring compassionate. These folks love animals - it is obvious.

My gratitude for this team is immense 🙏🏻 Even if I could not tell from my own direct experience, my pup’s reluctance to leave, without having said “goodbye & thank you,” to each team member, speaks volumes on the genuine compassion and superbulous quality of caring
treatment you’ll find here 🙂

They were superb when my cat fell sick. Can not emphasize how grateful I was for their swift professional and kind intervention. Even more stunning was the lovely condolence card sent, signed by all the staff. Still touches my heart every time I see it.

Dr. Vickers and Dr. Pfiel are the most compassionate, animal loving veterinarians that I have ever met. They have a wonderful team who works along with them, and all are incredibly skilled at what they do.
