Around midday, Nov 5th, 1871, 15-35 Yavapai warriors opened fire with repeating rifles on a stagecoach 8 miles outside of Wickenburg. Resulting in the killing of 6 people and the wounding of two people that had escaped. One of the wounded victims was a woman, Mollie Shepherd, a prostitute from Prescott. She too eventually succumbed to her wounds. Among the 6 killed was a young 22 year old writer from Boston named Frederick Wadsworth Loring who was assigned to cover an expedition led by Lieutenant Geroge Wheeler. The stage was on their way to San Bernadino CA. The Yavapai warriors retreated back to the newly established Camp Date Creek reservation. The US Army’s General Crook was assigned to the investigation by General Philip Sheridan. He sent troops after the Warriors who had fled Camp Date Creek to the Superstition mountains and were eventually massacred themselves at Skeleton Cave on December 28th, 1872. Some say the Wickenburg massacre victims were buried where they were slain on site. Others say the victims were taken back to Wickenburg and buried in a cemetary plot provided by Henry Wickenburg himself.

The only thing that has changed is the wagon ruts are now OHV tracks. Otherwise, the scene is timeless. You can see how the terrain would have allowed the ambush. I will say the thought of doing a running gun battle while carrying a wounded woman across the nearly sand like gravel of the wash seems...heroic, if not entirely truthful. We may never know what really happened here, but the affect it had on the West is undisputed.

The gate leading in is closed preventing people from accessing it, I was very disappointed considering I drove an hour out of the way
